Dr Irfan Ahmed

Consultant HPB Surgeon and Senior lecturer - University of Aberdeen

Mr Ahmed Consultant Surgeon specialising in complex liver, pancreas and bile duct diseases with a specialist interest in advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques (key hole surgery) and the development of modern surgical innovations. He has pioneered various special techniques in Virtual Scarless surgery (Surgery without scars). He is among a handful of surgeons who have introduced these techniques worldwide. 

Mr Ahmed completed his higher degree (MD) at the University of Leeds working with an internationally renowned team researching organ preservation. He led the pioneering work on Liver preservation techniques, developing a novel liver preservation solution. His work was funded by the Royal College of Surgeons of England via a research fellowship. He completed his higher surgical training in Mid Trent higher surgical rotation, before being appointed as the consultant surgeon (Liver, pancreas and bile ducts) in NHS Grampian. He holds academic appointments at the University of Aberdeen as senior lecturer and clinical tutor at the University of Edinburgh. He is also an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England. 

Mr Ahmed has extensive experience in research and lead various research groups collaborating with the international institutions. With a broad research base, he has published in all aspects of his areas of clinical interest. With more than 100 peer review publications (book chapters, review, editorials, original articles etc) and more than 100 scientific presentations, he remains on the forefront of latest surgical developments and innovations. 

Mr Ahmed has received a number of awards throughout his career including 5 medals, merit scholarships and various presentation awards on international forums. 

He is part of faculty for various international courses and teach modern advanced laparoscopic skills to the surgeons worldwide. He is involved in developing tele-medicine and telementoring for young surgeons using state of the art modern technologies.
